"Mining Your Ancestral Gold"

NWABP member Nancy McDonald, who recently published husband Laurence Overmire’s family history, One Immigrant’s Legacy: The Overmyer Family in America, 1751-2009, will provide insights on how to develop and market your own treasure chest of story and remembrance.

From research to marketing, by sharing her own story Nancy wants to provide you with the tools you need to get started.

 

About Nancy McDonald

With over 30 years of experience as an actor, director, producer, corporate trainer, arts educator, private coach and, more recently, publisher, Nancy McDonald’s diverse background has given her a unique perspective and innovative style. While working as a professional actor, she founded Shakespeare Stage Company in New York and The Writer’s Lab in Hollywood.

She currently teaches and lectures in many locations on a variety of communication and performance-related topics. Nancy is owner of Indelible Mark Publishing.

"Report from IPBA Publishing University - Part 2"

Each year, the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) holds their Publishing University.

This year's workshops was on How to Start, Grow and Succeed in Publishing's New World. NWABP member Paul Gerald attended the conference and workshops. He gave the first part of a presentation on the information gained in our July meeting.

He will give the second part of the presentation, including information about e-books in our September meeting.

 

About Paul Gerald

Paul is owner of Bacon and Eggs Press and is the author and publisher of Breakfast in Bridgetown: The Definitive Guide to Portland's Favorite Meal.

His first book was 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles of Portland, which came out in 2001. The Fourth Edition was just release in April 2010. His second book was Day and Overnight Hikes: Oregon's Pacific Crest Trail, and he also wrote Best Tent Camping: Oregon.

His book, Breakfast in Bridgetown has sold more than 3,000 copies, and he is now working on the second edition, to be published October 1, 2010.

"Your Achievements in Publishing"

Joe BiancoJoe Bianco of Bianco Publishing/Avellino Press speaks in the publishing business, as well as his latest book. Founded in 1995, Bianco Publishing has enhanced the legacy of its role model predecessor, Touchstone Press, a small but formerly prominent publisher in the Pacific Northwest. Joe will speak on the importance to have a goal in publishing and to acknowledge your achievements. He will list possible achievements to consider, based on his own experiences.

 

About Joe Bianco

Joseph R. Bianco is an author, editor and award-winning journalist who has for decades encouraged many fine writers working in one of the most significant literary landscapes in the country: Portland, Oregon. Joe developed The Sunday Oregonian’s former Northwest Magazine, which he edited for 18 years.

Joe shared a Peabody Award with Portland’s KATU-TV and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize by his editor while a young reporter back east. He also earned an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters given by the University of Portland and received several national journalistic honors for crime reporting. Other awards include the Izaak Walton League of America (Oregon Division) Golden Beaver Award in journalism and the coveted special citation of the national Thomas L. Stokes Award for his environmental series on water, air, land, sight and sound pollution. Bianco is past president of the American Association of Newspaper Sunday and Feature Editors and is a long-time member of NWABP.

"Marketing In Today's Turbulent Publishing Environment"

Carol WhiteIn this presentation, Carol White—known as the "marketing maven"—will talk about the trends in marketing for publishers. She will answer the questions: what's working, what's changing, and where do we go from here?

Carol is a speaker, author and marketing coach through her business Carol White | Marketing Maven. Her book is the award-winning Life Your Road-Trip Dream, now in its second edition.

She has been in sales and marketing her entire life. In addition to consulting with authors on their book projects, Carol is a sought-after speaker and is a frequent writer for websites and magazines on a variety of subjects including travel, publishing, and more.

Carol is also a member of NWABP.

“Develop Skills in Talking About Your Book with Toastmasters”

cleon coxIn the event that a speaker has an emergency and cannot make it to our meeting, Cleon Cox III will give a presentation on using the Toastmaster experience in developing your speaking skills for giving talks about your books.

Cleon Cox III went from janitor to stockbroker, trucking company owner to co-founder of the National College Association. He has invested his time, energy and expertise as facilitator of the Job Finders Support Group, Portland, OR. since 1991. His book The 50 Most Asked Questions From the Newly Unemployed is available from Amazon.com.

Cleon has been active in Toastmasters, winning the 2002 Herb Stude Award for outstanding educational service, District Seven Toastmasters International. He often speaks on the value of Toastmasters for career advancement. He has also been active in NWABP, is on the Board of Directors and was president of the organization.
